Crimson Clover is planted in late summer, it grows throughout the fall and winter, helping to crowd out winter annuals. For this application we seeded the entire field with the plan to til the rows for trees and allow the space in between to remain crimson clover until we are ready to plant the grass aisles. Depending on the weather and presence of summer annual weeds we will be seeding a summer cover crop before the grass seed goes down.
We also sow Crimson Clover in our tree rows the year after they are planted. This helps with weed suppression, provides a nitrogen source, and feeds the beneficial insects too!
The current Crimson Clover rows will be seeded with grass in fall 2020 and then late summer 2021 the tree rows will be filled with a cover crop. We've been having great success with forage radish, lentils, fava beans, and spring oats.
